Cheeger Inequalities for Submodular Transformations

چکیده
The Cheeger inequality for undirected graphs, which relates the conductance of an undirected graph and the second smallest eigenvalue of its normalized Laplacian, is a cornerstone of spectral graph theory. The Cheeger inequality has been extended to directed graphs and hypergraphs using normalized Laplacians for those, that are no longer linear but piecewise linear transformations. In this paper, we introduce the notion of a submodular transformation F : {0, 1}n → Rm, which appliesm submodular functions to the n-dimensional input vector, and then introduce the notions of its Laplacian and normalized Laplacian. With these notions, we unify and generalize the existing Cheeger inequalities by showing a Cheeger inequality for submodular transformations, which relates the conductance of a submodular transformation and the smallest non-trivial eigenvalue of its normalized Laplacian. This result recovers the Cheeger inequalities for undirected graphs, directed graphs, and hypergraphs, and derives novel Cheeger inequalities for mutual information and directed information. Computing the smallest non-trivial eigenvalue of a normalized Laplacian of a submodular transformation is NP-hard under the small set expansion hypothesis. In this paper, we present a polynomial-time O(log n)-approximation algorithm for the symmetric case, which is tight, and a polynomial-time O(log n+ logn · logm)-approximation algorithm for the general case. We expect the algebra concerned with submodular transformations, or submodular algebra, to be useful in the future not only for generalizing spectral graph theory but also for analyzing other problems that involve piecewise linear transformations, e.g., deep learning. Submodular Hypergraphs: p-Laplacians, Cheeger Inequalities and Spectral Clustering
We introduce submodular hypergraphs, a family of hypergraphs that have different submodular weights associated with different cuts of hyperedges. Submodular hypergraphs arise in clustering applications in which higher-order structures carry relevant information. For such hypergraphs, we define the notion of p-Laplacians and derive corresponding nodal domain theorems and k-way Cheeger inequaliti...
متن کاملSharp edge, vertex, and mixed Cheeger type inequalities for finite Markov kernels
We show how the evolving set methodology of Morris and Peres can be used to show Cheeger inequalities for bounding the spectral gap of a finite Markov kernel. This leads to sharp versions of several previous Cheeger inequalities, including ones involving edge-expansion, vertex-expansion, and mixtures of both. A bound on the smallest eigenvalue also follows.
متن کاملFour Cheeger - type Inequalities for Graph Partitioning Algorithms ∗
We will give proofs to four isoperimetric inequalities which are variations of the original Cheeger inequality relating eigenvalues of a graph with the Cheeger constant. The first is a simplified proof of the classical Cheeger inequality using eigenvectors. The second is based on a rapid mixing result for random walks by Lovász and Simonovits. The third uses PageRank, a quantitative ranking of ...

متن کاملCheeger Inequalities for General Edge-Weighted Directed Graphs
We consider Cheeger Inequalities for general edge-weighted directed graphs. Previously the directed case was considered by Chung for a probability transition matrix corresponding to a strongly connected graph with weights induced by a stationary distribution. An Eulerian property of these special weights reduces these instances to the undirected case, for which recent results on multi-way spect...
